As Huw is off again this Sunday (some pathetic excuse about his 25th Wedding Anniversary) it has been left to me again to post a ride. However, rather than a repeat of last week’s clash of an irresistible force and an immoveable object, I thought we should let Matt have his head and go with his suggested route of:

    Princess Gate – Ludchurch – Colby – Amroth – Wiseman’s Bridge – Coppitt Hall – Saundersfoot – Tenby – Manobier Coast – Fresh East – Pembroke – Lamphey – Redberth – Sageston – Carew – Cresselly – Lawrenny – Cross Hands – Templeton – Narberth

which I have interpreted as follows:

This is about 56 miles (91km) with 2,200ft (670m) of climbing. There are a number of options to shorten the route at Freshwater East and Pembroke to Carew, so lets see how we get on.

Normal meeting time and place, 0900 Bloomfield Centre Car Park.

Valleyman! What happened to the coalition and the debating society? I thought we’d agreed to discuss all important decisions in a mature and adult way. What happens as soon as our backs are turned? You’re cozying up to Maverick Matt with his talk of mountain top finishes, hairpins, rarified atmosphere and expansive views of the surrounding countryside. The Flat Earthers only hope is an alliance with the ever increasing membership of the Flapjack party. Surely saddlebags will now be de rigueur with all the extra weight that entails, and even Andrew will struggle to cart Janice’s rocks up Colby.

Debating topic; Marmalade – a preserve or a chutney? 😯

If everyone wants to do flat we could bring our turbo trainers & just ride in bloomfield carpark :)

Happy for changes if people want – hills usually mean better scenerey & better practice for daffodil

Although rain forecast for tomorrow so shorter route may win day

Ed feel free to set route for next week

Perhaps our routes should be first 20 very hilly starting at 830 meeting at 1000 will flat earthers for lats 20/30 relatively flat

    Hi Mat

Sorry didn’t realise anyone took anything written on here seriously.

Absolutely happy to continue following you up hills and for you to continue waiting for me at the top.

Sorry for any confusion caused by my larking about.

    See you tomorrow.

    happy families tomorrow :)

I didn’t wish to cause offence – we should work together so everyone gets better – so routes do cater for everyone don’t put people off with courses that never suit them

Too wet, too cold, too hungover and too knackerd to ride today.

Went out with Roger on Friday and he blew me away. Need a rest.

If you were expecting ‘smug’, you came the the right place…

Four of us, Matt G, Mark B, Kim and myself turned up at Bloomfield in less than ideal conditions at 0900. We waited in vain for five minutes to see if the Flat Earthers, the Fair Weatherers, or the simply pissed would be joining us. Being charitable, it may be the former took Matt’s advice and sought spiritualist enlightenment on their Turbo Trainers.

Matt as ever decided that the weather was simply not a sufficient challenge and arrived on a bike built from girders; the very antithesis of Huw’s new gossamer-like Look.

It was decided following a democratic, fully inclusive initial discussion that we would modify the route to take in about 30 miles looping out to Creswell Quay and back to Amroth as Mark had cycled over from Laugharne. Not a hint of dissent from the peleton.

Matt’s ever hopeful commentary on the weather; ‘looks like its brightening up’ failed to cheer Mark who was soaked to the skin and getting colder by the minute. His attempt to warm up by sprinting up hills worked in part, but it was clear he was loosing touch with his extremities.

Kim cut off at Redberth and the remaining intrepid threesome headed south over the Pembroke Road then back up Devonshire Drive. The coastal section started by decending into Saundersfoot via Sandy Hill Road then up to the top of Wisemans Bridge Hill.

Before dropping down into Wisemans Bridge we paused for refreshments. I spent Saturday night slaving over a hot stove to make Flapjack which turned out to be somewhere between Richard and Janice’s efforts (apparently a fan over is much hotter?!). The proof of the pudding was the lack of proposals of marriage as I shared out the golden, slightly crunchy, squares.

Matt and I decided that we had made our point, said goodbye to Mark and headed for home from Summerhill; Colby could wait for another (warmers, drier) day.

As a footnote, perhaps our illustrious Chairman needs to put in more training, rather than resting, if he wishes to keep up with the Flying Doctor.

Sorry I missed the ride, I would have enjoyed the camaraderie, the banter, maybe even the hills. Doesn’t sound like I would’ve enjoyed the flapjack or the freezing rain much.

Dr Hutch has written about riding throughout the British Winter in Cycling Weekly. Apparently, I am not a fair-weather cyclist, I am a keep-fit sunbather.
