The thrill-seekers met at 6 in Glandy Cross under the scorching sun. There was eight of us, Leights, Webby, Jonny Mad Doig, Ants, Jams, Julie, Mikey F and my sweaty self. Captain Field outlined the proposed route and gave his instructions, ‘No talking to strangers, do not eat the raisins found near the sheep and no taking the KOM segments from the locals’.

We set off nervously northwards wondering just what the Captain had meant when, with a twiddle and a twirl of his wee moustache, he mentioned a new hill he had found. We found out soon enough.

Several members of the book club were there so we passed the time comparing the merits of Dostoevesky’s ‘Crime and Punishment’ with Jeffrey Archer’s ‘First Amongst Equals’. I think we were all surprised by Jam’s empassioned championing of the Archer novel but in the end we all agreed that Dostoevesky was a pretentious bore and Jeffrey was just a tosser.

The Captain’s climb turned out to be a wall of tarmac rising to Moylegrove, Heartsink Hill on Strava. Webby had seen it before and summerised it as ‘starting bloody steep then getting bastard steeper’ before launching a suicide attack on the lower slopes. My Garmin auto-paused several times on the way up obviously assuming that I had stopped and done a Roger.

The view when we eventually got to the top was amazing though. The sun still high in the sky with its rays dancing on the water.

The descent to Newport was fantastic, Mad Doig gave us another demonstration of descending whilst steering with his chin, unfortunately he steered the wrong way at the junction but impressive none the less.

In Newport, Captain Field assured us it was all downhill to Narberth. He lied. I was pleased with my climb up Bedd Morris, I stayed with the peloton until the cattle grid, after that they became just specks in the distance. I did manage to see Leights’ now customary trick with his chain. Just a simple on and off on the steepest part of the climb.

At the top the view was magnificent, so much so that Julie forgot to unclip and started the will-she-won’t-she-fall wobble. She didn’t. This turned out to be a precursor for her main trick of the evening as she demonstrated scooting her bike uphill for several miles at a time. By this time the sun was slightly lower in the sky picking out the shadows on the shoreline.

Down then to Bessie’s. What a place! I’m not sure if my favourite comment was one of the locals saying that if we’d have rung ahead they would have put more staff on, Julie asking if this was what they meant by a Gastro-pub or Ants negotiating a beer from the cold shelf. Bessie’s doesn’t seem to have a toilet, whether this has anything to do with Dai’s helmet being soaking only Anthony really knows.

We left the pub, Bessie and Flapjack’s betrothed and set off through the shady Gwaun Valley before burping our way up the Bwlch. We were pretty strung out now and by the time I’d heaved myself to the top the advanced party had been there a while. We quickly arranged ourselves for a team photo in front of the setting sun before I tucked behind Anthony’s V8 and was chauffeured home by moonlight.

    Great night, thanks everyone.

    Captain North ‘ere!

We’re only doing the ‘Northern Rides’ on Tuesdays at the mo, as we can only cope with so much fun once a week! So tonites run is as published on the forum, but it does come up as far as Maenclochog if that’s any consolation!!

Strange you should mention the barmaid, Ants, because I thought she gave me a funny look when I ordered a dust and coke.

If anyone wants a Northern Dynamos gilet like mine (see photo) I think Leights is having a batch made up in the sweatshop behind Bessie’s.
